I got an iPhone from work yesterday. This phone is really cool. The place where I work is looking at rolling out 200 of them. I’m not sure if I’ll load music on it since I already have a 30 GB with all my songs, but I am having fun installing apps.

So does anyone have any cool apps to suggest?

My IPod hit this song last week during shuffle. Old school Beasties rock. Anyway, I thought I’d post this as the Song of the week! Plus it was a good excuse to learn how to post Youtube videos into WordPress. It’s pretty simple. Select the HTML tab for the post (change from Visual). Now just copy the embed code and paste it into the Post. And that’s it.

Install OpenOffice 3.0 in Ubuntu 8.10

I’ve been using Ubuntu 8.10 since it’s release and so far so good. It’s a great OS and everything is running smoothly. And since I’m a true geek, that does not make me happy. OpenOffice 3.0 did not make the Ibex cut, but I wanted it anyway. And what better way to screw up your Ubuntu install than to remove OOo 2.4 and upgrade to OOo 3.0.

The actual install is very easy. It just invovles downloading the .deb file from OpenOffice, extract it and run the .deb file with dpkg. I found an excellent tutorial over at Tombuntu.com that walks you through the install. It even walks you through removing the old Office programs. This was very simple to do and everything worked fine. The only thing I have to do is to handle all the file associations.

Gears Of War 2 Review

I would like to post my review of Gear of War 2, but I can’t. I haven’t played it yet even though I had it preordered. Why you ask? It’s because my XBox went F*CKING belly up! RRo(F*CKING)D!! Anyway, it’s at the Texas facility right now getting repaired. Hopefully I’ll get to play it soon.

I just uploaded the iNove theme and decided to give it a whirl. I kind of like it, I think I need to make a few tweaks to make me really happy though.

Media Server and Ubuntu

I’m currently working on building a media server running Ubuntu Ibex 8.10. So far I have LAMP and Webmin installed.

My current goals are:

Host and stream Divx movies and shows
Host all of out digital pics. I’d like to store all of our pics on the server and have people access them through a web browser. I’d like to have access both inside and outside of our network. I’ll probably use Gallery or some sort of web app.
Anything else that seems interesting.

Anyone have any good ideas? Let me know. I’ll post as I go along.

Installing uTorrent on Ubuntu

As I mentioned earlier, I needed uTorrent installed on my Ubuntu PC at home. Now that we have WINE installed and working, we can now get uTorrent running.

Once again, we are going to head over to UbuntuGuide.org and drill down to the uTorrent section.

Just a quick post. I’ve updated the site to WordPress 2.7 Beta 2. The upgrade went easy. I just have to fix some of the plugins.

Also, I plan on adding more content to the site. A future article I plan to write is getting ushare and Ubuntu to stream divx to my XBox 360. I would be working on it now, but my 360 decided to go belly up and greet me with the lovely RRoD. Hopefully I get it back soon (really glad I pre-ordered GOW2)

Get RAR & UNRAR to work with Gutsy Gibbon

I finished downloading a file that was in rar format.Â I browsed to the directory that the file was located in.Â I then right-clicked on Open with “Archive Manager” as I always did with previous versions of Ubuntu.Â I was then greeted with a lovely error message stating that it was an unknown file format.Â Well whatever should I do?

I immediately went to Ubuntu forums to search for an answer.Â It turns out that I needed to install RAR to make it work.Â So go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager.Â Do a search for RAR, and mark for install by clicking on the box.Â Click Apply then input your sudo password and away you go.Â You will now be able to unrar RAR files.
